Significant figures encompass all digits measured with certainty plus one final estimated or uncertain digit, ensuring that calculated results do not misrepresent experimental precision.
Universal Golden Rules of Significant Digits
- All non-zero digits (1–9) are always significant.
- Zeros between non-zero digits (captive zeros) are significant (e.g. 5004 has 4 sig figs).
- Leading zeros prior to the first non-zero digit are never significant (e.g. 0.002 has 1 sig fig).
- Trailing zeros in a number containing a decimal point are significant (e.g. 92.00 has 4 sig figs).
